Description
MEET THE PRODUCER | Emerson Narváez is a young, second generation coffee producer in the renowned Nariño region of Colombia… but he got a bit of a reluctant start. Emerson explored various professions—serving as a soldier, a builder, and a baker—before fate brought him back to the family business. Once he finally dipped his toes in the proverbial water, Emerson dove all the way in, immersing himself in coffee education, prioritizing crop quality over quantity, and working to improve sustainability practices on his family’s farm.
That farm, Finca el Turpial, is a pretty special place. Located in the village of El Consuelo and situated high on the side of the Andes Mountains, its privileged position grants the farm excellent growing conditions for specialty coffee, including this SL28 lot from Emerson’s September 2024 harvest.
TRUST THE PROCESS | After being handpicked at peak ripeness, whole coffee cherries undergo an initial round of anaerobic fermentation in plastic GrainPro bags, lasting four days. After this, the coffee is de-pulped mechanically and stuffed right back into those GrainPro bags, where it then undergoes an additional 24 hours of anaerobic fermentation—this time in dry mucilage. Finally, the coffee is washed with potable water, the mucilage is removed, and another round of quality sorting takes place via flotation. The remaining cherries are then spread out to sun-dry on raised beds for about 20 days.
TAKE A SIP | Delicately floral and subtly spiced, this coffee is reminiscent of some of our very favorite African coffee characteristics. Stone fruit, like nectarine, is present throughout the cup, and there’s a tell-tale currant note, which tips its hat to the SL28 variety’s Kenyan origin story.
